Before you write
Most problems have a quick fix. Try these first:
- Nothing happens on iPhone or iPad after Start. Safari needs Motion & Orientation access. If you tapped Don’t Allow, the browser remembers that until you close it. Swipe Safari (or Chrome, Edge…) away in the app switcher, open this page again, tap Start and choose Allow.
- The page opened inside another app. Social media and chat apps use built-in browsers that can block the motion sensor. Open the page in Safari or Chrome instead.
- Android shows no reading. In Chrome, open Settings, then Site settings, then Motion sensors, and make sure this site is allowed.
- It says “No vibration detected.” The shaking is weaker than 1.5 times your phone’s own sensor noise. Put the phone flat on a hard surface, not a rug or cushion, and take off a thick case.
- The frequency looks wrong. Phones measure up to about 30 Hz. Faster vibration can show up as a false, lower frequency. How it works explains why.
- A computer shows a QR code. Most laptops and desktops have no motion sensor. Scan the code to open the same page on your phone.
To check whether your phone’s sensor works at all, run the accelerometer test. It shows the raw numbers and your sample rate.
What to include when you report a problem
The more of this you send, the faster we can find the cause:
- Your phone model. For example, “iPhone 13” or “Samsung Galaxy S23”. A tablet counts too.
- Your system version. For example, iOS 18 or Android 15. You’ll find it under Settings, then About.
- Your browser. Safari, Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox or another. Say if the page opened inside another app, like Facebook or Instagram.
- The page URL. Copy it from the address bar, so we know which tool you used.
- What you did and what happened. For example: “Tapped Start, allowed motion access, the reading stayed at —.” Copy any message on screen word for word.
- A screenshot or screen recording, if you can.
If a reading seems wrong, also tell us what you measured, where the phone sat, and the numbers you got. The sample rate and the highest measurable frequency from the result details help a lot. A saved image or CSV file is even better.
Please don’t send personal information we don’t need, like your address or account details.
Other reasons to write
- A wrong number or source. Tell us the page, the number and the source you’re comparing it with. We check every correction against the original document.
- An idea for a tool. Tell us what you’d like to measure. Phones can’t read vibration faster than about 30 times a second, so some ideas, like bearings or fast motors, aren’t possible in a browser.
- A privacy question. The privacy policy covers most of it. Ask about anything it doesn’t answer.
What we can’t help with
We can’t diagnose your car, machine or house by email, or tell you whether a building is safe. A reading is a good guide, not a certified measurement. For a real concern, contact a qualified professional: a mechanic, an appliance technician, a structural engineer or a vibration monitoring company.
If you smell gas, or you think a building is unsafe, leave first. Then call 911 or your gas company.
